MoHUA formulates and administers policies governing housing, urban planning, municipal governance, urban transport (excluding railways), water supply, sanitation, and many more aspects of city development.
Roles & Responsibilities
Urban Policy & Legislation
- Frames national housing and urban development policies, coordinates with Central ministries and states
- Led RERA, Model Tenancy Act, Delhi Master Plans, and the Urban Land Ceiling Act
Management of Government Estates
- Oversees Central government buildings, Delhi markets, land allotment, leasing, and property development
- Manages estates via its Directorate of Estates with multiple regional offices
Urban Infrastructure Missions
- Drives major urban programs like PMAY‑U, Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, Swachh Bharat, HRIDAY, DAY‑NULM, JNNURM
Municipal Empowerment & Planning
- Works on strengthening municipal self-governance, planning modernisation, and capacity building
