The Ministry of Jal Shakti is a ministry under Government of India which was formed by merging of two ministries; Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Construction of Water Supply Infrastructure
- Designs and constructs rural and urban piped water supply systems, under schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission and AMRUT (with MoHUA).
- Includes laying pipelines, setting up intake wells, overhead tanks, pumping stations, treatment plants, and distribution networks.
2. Construction of Dams, Barrages, and Reservoirs
- Through bodies like Central Water Commission (CWC), plans and supervises large hydraulic structures such as:
- Multipurpose dams
- Irrigation canals
- Reservoir embankments
- Flood retention basins
3. Sewerage and Sanitation Systems
- Under Swachh Bharat Mission–Gramin (SBM‑G), funds and monitors construction of:
- Household and community toilets
- Septic tanks and soak pits
- Solid-liquid waste management systems
- Village-level Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs)
4. Groundwater Recharge and Rainwater Harvesting Structures
- Encourages construction of check dams, percolation tanks, recharge wells, rooftop harvesting units, and pond rejuvenation structures under Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch the Rain.
5. River Rejuvenation & Embankment Construction
- Executes construction of:
- River embankments
- Riverfront development
- Sewage treatment plants (STPs) and interceptor drains
- Under Namami Gange Programme, focuses on ganga ghats, STPs, and anti-erosion works.
6. Technical Guidelines & Standards
- Issues construction manuals, design standards, and technical circulars for dam safety, canal linings, piping, and STP design through CWC and other agencies.
- Regulates quality and safety of water-related construction projects.
7. Water Management in Construction Projects
- Coordinates with other ministries (e.g. MoEFCC, MoHUA) to evaluate water use efficiency and approve water withdrawal plans in large infrastructure projects (roads, cities, industries).
