The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is responsible for India’s national security and the infrastructure needed to support the armed forces. Its construction activities span strategic, operational, residential, and logistic infrastructure, mainly in border regions, remote areas, and cantonments.
The MoD is a major player in specialized and strategic construction, often in challenging environments like the Himalayas, deserts, and coastal areas.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Border and Strategic Infrastructure Development
- Executed by: Border Roads Organisation (BRO), under MoD
- Key Projects:
- Construction of roads, tunnels, and bridges in border areas (e.g., Indo-China, Indo-Pakistan)
- Development of airfields and helipads in high-altitude and remote locations
- Infrastructure for forward military posts, bunkers, and surveillance towers
2. Cantonment and Military Base Infrastructure
- Construction and maintenance of:
- Barracks, headquarters, and armories
- Military hospitals, training academies, and logistics bases
- Mess halls, vehicle garages, and weapon storage facilities
- Executed by: Military Engineering Services (MES), one of the largest construction agencies in India
3. Housing and Community Facilities
- Development of residential quarters for armed forces personnel and their families
- Includes schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, recreational areas, and utility systems (water, sewage, roads)
4. Defence R&D and Manufacturing Infrastructure
- Construction of advanced research and production facilities under:
- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
- Ordnance Factories and Defence PSUs
- Involves clean rooms, testing chambers, labs, missile development units, etc.
5. Emergency and Disaster Relief Infrastructure
- Rapid construction of temporary bridges, airstrips, and shelters during national emergencies and natural disasters.
- BRO and MES play key roles in restoring connectivity in disaster-prone and sensitive zones.
