Pile Foundations

Pile foundations are common type of deep foundation. These arerelatively long, slender members that transmit foundation loadsthrough soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil or rock stratatransfer the load at desired depth either by end bearing or skinfriction. Pile foundations are used for economic, constructional or soilcondition considerations, it is desirable to transmit loads to stratabeyond the practical reach of shallow foundations. In addition tosupporting structures, piles are also used to anchor structures againstuplift forces and to assist structures in resisting lateral and overturningforces. Thick slabs/pile cap are used to tie a group of piles together tosupport and transmit column loads to the piles.

The load transfermechanism of a pile/pile group is highly influenced by the pileinstallation methods and surrounding soil conditions. The accuracy ofthe pile foundation analysis is mainly depending on the level ofunderstating of the soil-pile interaction aspects. This short course willcover various topics related to pile foundation analysis and design.
